Preparing your roots for market:
Depending on the natural product you have collected (roots, herbs or bark), there are a few guidelines you can follow to ensure your product will be considered high quality.
- Roots: All dirt should be rinsed thoroughly from the root in a timely manner following harvest. After the roots have been cleaned, the drying process should begin. We prefer roots be dried in the shade with ample airflow to deter any chance of molding. Roots can also be dried in the sun with ample airflow. Once the roots have been dried and are ready to be sold place them in a clean bag for transport. Using a previously used bag can cause cross contamination.
- Herbs/Leaves: When gathering leaves remember it is the leaf that is sought after, not the stem. Many dealers will reject material with high stem content. It is best to dry leaf in the shade with ample airflow. Drying leaf in the sun will result in loss of color. Buyers look as closely at color as stem content.
- Barks: There are many different types of barks and each requires different preparation. When collecting inner bark make sure that the outer woody bark is removed prior to sale. When collecting outer bark take care to remove as much wood content as possible.
